How to improve your mental strength in tennis
Eine Weisheit besagt, dass ein Tennismatch zwischen den Ohren entschieden wird. Fakt ist, dass die richtige mentale Einstellung vor einem Tennis-Match zu einer der wesentlichen, wenn nicht zu einer der wichtigsten Erfolgsfaktoren im Tennis gehört. Eine noch größere Rolle spielt die permanente Fokussierung auf das Wesentliche während und zwischen den einzelnen Ballwechseln.
Was also tun, um in einem wichtigen Match und in den entscheidenden Situationen nicht den Faden zu verlieren? Es gibt Dutzende von Tipps für ein Tennis-Match. Da die Sportpsychologie sehr komplex ist, ist der ein oder andere Ratschlag vielleicht hilfreich, aber um dauerhaft bessere Leistungen abrufen zu können, bedarf es mehr. Es fängt bereits mit der richtigen Herangehensweise an und endet mit der Einstellung vor dem nächsten Match.
Tennis ist ein unfassbar vielseitiger Sport. Neben den mentalen Fähigkeiten gehören außerdem die körperliche Fitness, Kraft, Kraftausdauer, Schnelligkeit, Beweglichkeit und Antizipation hinzu. Demnach dürfte klar sein, dass es sehr viele Faktoren gibt, die für einen Sieg oder eine Niederlage verantwortlich sind. Manchmal sind auch nur ein paar Prozentpunkte entscheidend. Das gilt im Übrigen nicht nur im professionellen Bereich, sondern generell im Leistungssport als auch im Breitensport.
Die gute Nachricht ist, dass alle diese Dinge erlernbar sind. Die traurige Wahrheit ist, dass es im mentalen Bereich nicht ganz so einfach ist. Oft hilft nur ein Blick von außen und aus der Vogelperspektive, um Dinge zu erkennen, die für einen selbst nicht sichtbar sind. Es gibt sehr viele Tennisspieler, die mit mentalen Blockaden zu kämpfen haben. Das geht jedem so und es ist auch nicht etwas, was man nicht optimieren kann.
Nur, ganz alleine kommst du wahrscheinlich nicht weiter. Viele Tennisspieler glauben, dass sie gewisse Situationen nur mit sich selber ausmachen können und dann hoffen, es beim nächsten Mal besser zu machen. Das Problem dabei ist, dass es schnell passieren kann, dass man in einer Art Hamsterrad gefangen ist und keinen Ausweg findet. Anstelle sich externe Hilfe zu suchen, versucht man verkrampft, es mit eigenen Mitteln zu schaffen. Das kann bei dem einen oder anderen Spieler zwar mal gut gehen, jedoch ist es keine Lösung, um dauerhaft mental besser zu werden. Der große Nachteil dabei ist, dass die eine Sorte von Spielern dadurch immer mehr verbissen wird und die andere Sorte von Spielern früher oder später die Motivation verliert.
Es gibt Tennisspieler, die können im Training deutlich bessere Leistungen abrufen als im Wettkampf. Warum ist das so? Noch ärgerlicher ist es, wenn man eigentlich der bessere Spieler ist und man das Match trotzdem verliert. Egal wo man auf den Tennisplätzen dieser Welt hinschaut, so etwas passiert tagtäglich. Im Match passieren ein oder zwei knifflige Situationen und schon gleitet das gesamte Match aus der Hand. Zu lernen damit umzugehen ist einer der wichtigsten Faktoren für einen Tennisspieler, denn im Verlaufe eines Tennis-Matches oder eines Turniers bist du meistens auf dich alleine gestellt.
Im Tennis kann es auch passieren, dass eine sicher geglaubte Führung plötzlich aus der Hand gegeben wird. Genau deshalb benötigst du die innerliche Ruhe, um in gewissen Situationen die richtigen Entscheidungen zu treffen. Damit du in einem Tennis-Match den Platz als Sieger verlässt brauchst du in Drucksituationen die mentale Fitness, um im richtigen Moment deine beste Leistung abzurufen. Gleichzeitig musst du aber in anderen Momenten auch entspannen können, um in eine Art Flow-Zustand zu gelangen.
Tennis wird im Kopf entschieden, soviel dürfte klar sein. Zahlreiche Matches gehören verloren, weil es jedem Tennisspieler immer wieder schwer fällt, die Konzentration über die Dauer eines gesamten Matches hoch zu halten. Wie würde es sich für dich anfühlen, zu wissen, was als Nächstes auf dich zukommt? Allein die Vorstellung kann enorm viel Kraft freisetzen.
Die Arbeit im Kopf beginnt mit einem Ziel und dem unbedingten Willen, dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Der Kopf hat maßgeblichen Einfluss auf unsere Handlungen auf dem Tennisplatz. Die mentale Stärke ist für einen Tennisspieler eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften. Du musst dich über lange Zeit mit einem höchsten Maß konzentrieren können und deine Emotionen unter Kontrolle bekommen. Selbstzweifel, Unzufriedenheit und Ängste haben im Wettkampf nichts verloren. Niederlagen im Tennis gehören dazu, so wie der gelbe Filz auf einem Tennisball.
Viele Tennisspieler stellen sich daher die Frage: Kann man die mentale Stärke wirklich trainieren? Kann man sein Gehirn wie einen Muskel trainieren? Die Antwort ist ja, das kann man sehr wohl. Um den hohen Stellenwert der mentalen Stärke im Tennissport noch einmal zu verdeutlichen, hier ein paar Zahlen: Der mentale Anteil für eine Spitzenleistung liegt bei Tennissportlern bei über 80%, bei Leistungssportlern sogar bei 90%. Validen Statistiken zufolge dauert ein Tennis-Match im Durchschnitt 90 bis 98 Minuten (Quelle: ATP). Die Nettospielzeit beträgt dabei durchschnittlich nur 17 bis 23 Minuten. Das bedeutet, dass in ca. 70-85% der Zeit keine Ballwechsel gespielt werden.
Die Psyche hat also im Tennis einen wesentlichen Anteil und einen enormen Einfluss auf die Leistungsfähigkeit von Spielern. Unter den Begriff der mentalen Stärke zählen unter anderem Konzentration, Entschlossenheit, Professionalität, Beharrlichkeit, Arbeit, Mut, Kampfgeist, Ehrgeiz, und Disziplin. Leider wird dem Bereich des mentalen Tennistraining noch viel zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Fast jeder Tennisspieler arbeitet akribisch an Grundschlägen, am Netzspiel und an der eigenen Fitness. Hinzu kommen Aufschlagtraining, der Return sowie taktische Spielzüge. Der Schwerpunkt von Tennisspielern liegt also darauf, Schlagvariationen unterschiedlichster Art auszuführen. Doch ein tennisspezifisches Mentaltraining ist einem Großteil von Spielern fremd.
Dabei ist gerade Tennis ein mentaler Sport, wenn nicht der mentale Sport. Über den Verlauf eines Tennis-Matches entscheidet zu einem Großteil der Kopf. Auf den eigenen mentalen Bereich legen die allermeisten Spieler leider einen zu geringen Fokus. Dennoch gibt es verschiedene Möglichkeiten die Leistungsfähigkeit von Tennisspielern gerade in dieser Disziplin zu steigern.
Tennis ist aber auch ein verrückter Sport. An manchen Tagen fällt es einem kinderleicht den Gegenüber auf dem Platz nach Belieben zu dominieren und an anderen Tagen weiß man einfach nicht was los ist. Was ist der Grund dafür? Wie wäre es, wenn man einen Lösungsweg finden würde, um frei aufspielen zu können?
